Band Update 4/7

Dear G-A Band Students and Parents,

I hope you are doing well and staying healthy! Like many of you, I was saddened by the recent news that we will not be learning face-to-face for the rest of the school year. While there is no true substitute for the authentic band experience of making music together, I am committed to doing my absolute best to continue making music online! Please stay tuned for more info as we work on developing our plans for distance learning.

INSTRUMENT RETRIEVAL

Our administrative team is working on a plan for students and parents to retrieve personal belongings, including band instruments, from the buildings. Please stay tuned for details. Everyone’s instrument must go home, including school owned instruments, so you can participate in making music from a distance! Please let me know if you will need help picking up your instrument from the buildings. I am happy to help!

SIGN UP FOR BAND!

It is going to be so much fun to make music together again when we return to school this fall! The G-A Band is going to have another fantastic year and I want you to be a part of it! Be sure to select Band as one of your electives for the 2020-21 school year!

BAND CAMP

Dates for band camp this summer are set!

  • Thursday July 30 - Leadership training for section leaders, squad leaders, drum majors (9am-5pm)
  • Friday July 31 - Freshman orientation for all 9th grade students with section leaders, squad leaders, drum majors (9am-5pm)
  • Saturday August 1 - Band camp for full band (9am-5pm)
  • Monday August 3-Friday August 7 - Band camp for full band (9am-5pm)
Please note that all students in high school band are required to attend band camp in preparation for the upcoming school year. A typical day of band camp includes learning music, basic marching fundamentals, and drill for the pregame and halftime shows. It is critical for students to be present for this instruction, as the learning that takes place at band camp cannot be made up another time. Please note that work conflicts, babysitting, drivers training, and not having a ride are not excused absences. Band is a team activity, and the success of the band depends on every member showing up!

Band camp packets will be going out to families in May, which will include forms and other pertinent information. I will be sending out information soon for students interested in trying out for a leadership position (section leader, squad leader, drum major) and for students interested in color guard. The theme and songs for this year’s halftime show will also be revealed soon! (Hint: 🥳)

As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I miss you all and am thinking about you! Take good care of yourself and keep washing your hands! Talk to you soon.

Mr. Walker
