Good afternoon, families: Today we heard the State of MI, MDHHS and Governor Whitmer, share their concerns about the escalation of community spread of the Covid-19 virus. The State encouraged but only recommended that districts consider closing high schools and sports for two weeks after spring break. At this time, we have met with our local county health officials and do not feel that G-A needs to close our high school for virtual learning nor shut down our athletic teams. Fortunately, so far this first week back after spring break, the rapid antigen tests our athletes have undergone, have produced all negative test results. We also are thankful that it is spring and that our sports teams have moved outdoors. However, athletes still sit on buses together and in dugouts, together; therefore, it is still critical that our students continue mitigation strategies at all times. Outside of school is also important.. Doing so will help our athletes continue to play and our schools remain open for face to face instruction. We continue to appreciate our families' support! We will share updated information from our Kalamazoo County Health Department as soon as it is available. Respectfully, Wendy Somers

Middle school tennis and track season has started. We would like to see more students taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in an extra curriculum activity. Research indicates that students that participate in athletics do better in school, have a more positive self-esteem and builds social skills. Please consider participating in either tennis or track. Congratulations to our 8th grade girls basketball for defeating Constantine 30-29 to finish the season with 3 straight wins. The Rams got off to a slow start and trailed 8-0 early in the game. They rallied to take the lead at halftime. Constantine came back in the 4th quarter to take a 29-25 lead with :53 remaining. But having the right mindset proved important for the ladies as the scored the final 5 points, highlighted by a 3 point shot with :12 to win. As discussed in the locker room after the game, if they can remember 1 thing from this season it would be NEVER QUIT, play until the final whistle. This is true in basketball but in life also ❤️🏀 Proud of the girls and look forward to watching them grow over the next 4 years.

February 22, 2021 Dear G-AMS Families: We have had a great day back to 100% face-to-face learning at G-AMS! With our health and safety protocols in place and with much positivity, the G-AMS staff looks forward to a productive remainder of the school year. As our full student body returns to the building on a daily basis, vehicle traffic has increased significantly at the middle school. We are experiencing some difficulty with student drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. If you choose to transport your student(s) to or from the building, please follow these safety guidelines: Pull into the loading/unloading zone at the front of the building (parallel to the front sidewalk) If all designated spots are occupied in the loading/unloading zone, PLEASE PARK IN THE LOT AND ESCORT YOUR STUDENT TO THE FRONT SIDEWALK OR PARK IN THE LOT AND WAIT FOR A SPACE TO BECOME AVAILABLE IN THE LOADING / UNLOADING ZONE. Please DO NOT block the traffic lane, especially for the buses attempting to move to and from the back of the building. We appreciate your consideration and understanding with regard to these logistics. The safety of our students is of paramount importance. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the middle school office at (269) 484-2020.

Attention 6th and 7th grade Students and Parents: As we move out of fully-virtual learning next week and back to the HYBRID model, the virtual portion of the HYBRID model will be updated in order to better meet the needs of our online students. **6th grade core teachers will still record all lessons and make those available in Google Classrooms. In addition, these teachers will be available via ZOOM from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:32 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. During these times, online learners can "chime in" and ask questions, get clarification, or touch base with the teacher. **7th grade core teachers will be live-streaming lessons each class period for students to attend via ZOOM. Students should follow their class schedules and ZOOM at appropriate times. For instance, if a student has math 1st hour, he/she should be ZOOMING with the math teacher, starting at 8: 17 a.m. Live-streaming each class period will allow for more interaction with the teachers and provide an opportunity for real-time questions and answers. If a student misses the ZOOM class period, he/she should view the video recording of the lesson and complete the posted assignment.

*** WE NEED YOUR HELP! *** Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools will continue to serve nutritious meals through this school year. All children ages 18 and under may receive meals at no cost. This includes both breakfast and lunch. In this time of uncertainty, it is even more important to stay as healthy as possible. School meals are being provided at NO charge to all students this year. Even though all meals are available at no cost during this school year, we still NEED families to complete the free and reduced meal application. The collection of this information is CRITICAL as it is directly tied to state and federal educational funding for G-A Schools to support our students. Applications are available online at www.lunchapp.com. A free and reduced lunch application will be included with every meal we distribute this Friday 11/6. We can accept a mailed, faxed or e-mailed application just as easily! So, don’t delay—fill out and return an application today! If you have questions, please call Cheryl Cadwell at 269-484-2016. While applications may be submitted at any time during the school year, those received by November 9th will be included in the district’s fall count!

To all 6th/7th grade students and families: After careful consideration of feedback from a recent parent survey, we have decided to address two of the most prevalent issues with regard to distance / virtual learning. This is of paramount importance as we move forth for the remainder of this week and through next week, 100%-virtually teaching and learning. Unmanageable student workload was the primary concern for many. In addition, lack of interaction with and/or availability of teachers was also of great concern. Henceforth, the academic team has devised a more manageable plan that addresses both of these concerns. This plan has been posted in each of the Google Classrooms and has been shared with and explained to students. You may access it through the "documents" section on the middle school page .

Covid-19 Update 10/30/20 Yesterday evening we confirmed that a HS student tested positive for Covid-19. We have completed our contact tracing and all individuals have been placed in quarantine. Unfortunately, it does mean that both our JV and Varsity volleyball teams will not be able to complete their season as they were exposed to the positive individual. We need to stress how important it is, that parents ask their students each day whether they have any symptoms at all and if so, please keep them home. Even if you and your student think it's allergies or "just a head cold." The virus is spreading significantly in the community and we need to be vigilant. RECESS NOTIFICATION Please note that the ENTIRE middle school, grades 4-7, will participate in OUTSIDE recess this year. In consideration of health department guidelines and district safety protocols, the previous years’ options (like inside gym time, board games, cards, reading time, etc.) are being placed on hold for the time being. All students will be required to go outside for recess time. We have brand new playground equipment and several other outdoor activity options. This is a great opportunity for students to get outside, remove their masks, get some fresh air, and exert some energy. Outside recess will only be cancelled if inclement weather ensues. IMPORTANT: Students should come to school dressed in clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. Winter coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc. are important in keeping students warm and healthy.

A GENTLE REMINDER: Student Drop off and Pick up at the Middle School The middle school is experiencing some difficulty with traffic blocking the entry and exit of school buses. If you drop off and/or pick up your student at the middle school, please follow these procedures: • Drop off / pick up at the front of the building • Follow all one-way signage • If all spaces in the front loading / unloading zone (parallel with the front sidewalk) are full, PLEASE PARK IN THE LOT. After parking in the lot, you can: o Get out of your vehicle to escort your student to or from the front entry area (for safety purposes, DO NOT allow your student to walk, unescorted, through the parking lot) OR o Wait for a spot to be vacated in the loading / unloading zone and move your vehicle to the open spot for drop off / pick up • It is imperative that no vehicles line up outside of the designated loading / unloading zone. If vehicles line up at the perimeter of the parking lot and in the driveway leading to the back parking lot, this impedes or blocks bus traffic. THANK YOU FOR FOLLOWING THESE GUIDELINES AND ENSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN

G-A Community School District and the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Service Department (KCHCS) statement regarding the recent COIVD-19 outbreak: Out of an abundance of caution, GACS District has decided to close all school buildings due to individuals testing positive for COVID-19 within the Early Childhood Special Education classroom (ECSE). At this time, there are three positive cases associated with this outbreak. The KCHCS uses the CDC outbreak definition, which is when two or more cases are epidemiologically linked. Per the CDC guidelines, individuals who have tested positive have been isolated, and individuals who have been identified as a close contact have been notified and quarantined. To date, there is no known exposure outside of the ECSE classroom. KCHCS is working closely with GACS on all public health recommendations for the school district, ECSE Center, and those identified as affected individuals. GACS District is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Thursday, October 1, 2020. Further communication will be sent confirming this reopen date.

This weekend you received an email regarding one of our G-A family members who has tested positive for Covid -19. Those individuals who were considered a close contact were already advised to quarantine. As the weekend has progressed, we want to be proactive with the health department and further investigate the information we have received. Therefore on Monday, September 28th, 2020 all district programs including preschool, daycare, the enhancement center and K-12 buildings will be closed for in person instruction. Teachers in K-12 will be providing online learning opportunities for their students. Please follow your at home learning schedule. For further details, access your teachers Seesaw or Google Classroom. Please know that the health and safety of our staff and students is of utmost importance.

Student Drop off and Pick up at the Middle School The middle school is experiencing some difficulty with traffic blocking the entry and exit of school buses.

GUESS WHAT?.....IT'S TIME! The start of the 2020-2021 school year is upon us! It may not feel like a typical start to the school year; however, the G-AMS staff eagerly anticipates interacting with our students once again! Because the well-being of all is a top priority, we are implementing a few protocols which will allow us to maintain a safe / healthy learning environment for our students and staff. Please take note of the following: ● If you choose to drive your student to school in the morning, drop off time is 8:05 a.m. The building will not be accessible until 8:05 a.m.,and there is no supervision available outside the building before that time. ● If you choose to pick up your student after school, he/she is released at 3:17 p.m. You may meet your student outside, at the front of the building. Please park your vehicle and meet your student on the front sidewalk area. For safety purposes, your student SHOULD NOT walk into the parking lot without his/her family member or family-appointed, adult escort. Staff members will monitor this area and be available should you have questions. ● Masks will be worn by all students and staff members at all times, except when eating lunch / breakfast and when outside for break / recess times. If you have a special needs student or a student with a medical issue that impedes him/her from wearing a mask, please contact the middle school office at (269) 484-2020 for further information. ● We suggest that students have two masks. Though two are not required, it might prove to be refreshing to change masks midway through the day. If your student is using a disposable mask, the health department encourages a “one- use” policy. If your student is using a cloth or home-made mask, the health department encourages these to be washed, daily. ● Please note that “badger or gator” masks, bandannas, or scarves ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FACE COVERINGS for the school building. As we embark on the new school year, let’s work together to make it a great one!
