Galesburg-Augusta Selects Wendy Somers as Next Superintendent

The Galesburg-Augusta Board of Education has extended an offer to Fruitport Middle School Principal, Ms. Wendy Somers to serve as their new Superintendent. The board voted to offer Somers the position and enter contract negotiations after the conclusion of second round interviews Tuesday night.

Board President Jeff McCubbin called Somers during the meeting to let her know of the Board’s offer. McCubbin also let her know he had put the call on “speakerphone” to allow the audience of over 25 to hear their conversation.  Ms. Somers responded to the offer with, " I am delighted to be named the new superintendent of Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools.  I look forward to working alongside all members of the school community as we "do whatever it takes" to help all G-A students be successful.”  Somers’s statement was followed by applause from the crowd.

McCubbin said of Somers, “Wendy is a great fit for the candidate profile we developed and she made an excellent impression on those she met with during the process.  We were very fortunate to have a great field of candidates to choose from, including two outstanding finalists.  However, in the end, it was very apparent that Wendy was the best fit for our district.  We all look forward to working with her to continue to move our district forward.”

Search Consultant Gary Rider, of the Michigan Leadership Institute, said “The Board did an outstanding job of listening to feedback from the public.  They also kept to their commitment to assess the candidates against the profile that was developed using feedback from the staff and community.”

Wendy Somers has served as Middle School Principal for the Fruitport Community Schools for the past five years.  Prior to this work she was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Fruitport for five years, and served as the School Improvement Consultant/Academic Leadership Coach for Central Michigan University for five years.  Ms. Somers has a Master’s degree in Middle Level Education from Central Michigan University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the James Madison College of Michigan State University.
