    Course Description:

    This course will focus on the following areas:

    *Writing: emphasis will be on sentence structure, paragraph development and correct punctuation. Types of writing will include journaling, narrative, descriptive and persuasive essays, short stories, poetry, reports, and power point presentations.

    *Grammar

    *Spelling

    *Vocabulary

    Grading will be based on daily journal writing, weekly spelling tests and daily and/or weekly in-class writing assignments.

    Grading system:
     
     93-100% A   73%-77%     
     C
     90-92% A-   70%-72%    C-
     88-89% B+   68%-69%    D+
     83-87% B   63%-67%    D
     80-82% B-   60%-62%    D-
     78-79% C+   0%-59%    E

    Reading

    Course Description:
     
    This course is designed to increase the students overall reading ability and to encourage children to become independent readers. This class will focus on the following areas:

    *reading fluency

    *reading comprehension


    *vocabulary development

    *phonemic awareness


    Materials:
     
    In this class we will use a wide range of instructional reading materials including the use of short stories, reading workbooks and novels.
    Reading Counts plays a major role in this class. Classroom time is provided so that students can choose a book to read that fits their reading level and interest. Students are to bring a Reading Counts book to class each day. We have a wide variety of Reading Counts books in our library and I also have many in my room which may be borrowed at any time. Requirements for Reading Counts will be determined on an individual basis.
